Forklift Battery Safety
The large industrial sized batteries used to power electric forklifts must be charged frequently and properly maintained. Safety procedures should be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is important to check battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is essential for anybody working with a lift truck battery. Complete protection comprises safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect both skin and clothes from leaked acid or other residue is to put on an approved apron on the body and thick rubber gloves on the hands.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Next to the charging place should be an emergency eyewash post. The path to the station must not be obstructed and an injured employee must be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The battery and charger should be at the same amperage. It should be turned off while the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open fire are prohibited in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Never allow objects like for example matches or lighters to be used when somebody is inspecting the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
The battery charging are also has to be well ventilated. The recharging process can release fumes. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
