Inspect a Forklift
According to HRSDC and OSHA statistics, there are about 10,000 forklift-related worklplace injuries each year within North America. Several injuries result from the lack of maintenance of the machinery and proper equipment inspection. Other injuries are because of operator error.
Injuries are not the only issues that are related to the operation and maintenance of lift trucks. Another serious problem is damage to property. Forklift mishaps could cause damage to sprinklers, overhead pipes, and other equipment and building walls. By completing thorough inspections every day, you could help reduce forklift injuries.
You should first turn the engine off prior to inspecting the forklift. Check the levels of the engine oil, fuel, hydraulic oil, coolant and brake fluid. Visually inspect the machine's tires looking for indications of wear, appropriate air pressure and general condition. Visually check the forks on the front of the machinery as well. Verify the condition of the top-clip retaining pin and heel. Check that the backrest is firmly attached. Confirm that the overhead and finger guards are attached. Visually inspect the cables and stops, the mast chains and the hydraulic hoses as well.
On liquid propane or LP forklifts, check the propane tank. Look for any indications of rust, corrosion or damage. Be sure that the battery has adequate levels of electrolyte and that is sufficiently charged. Visually check all belts. Check to confirm the location of the owner's handbook and make sure it is situated in the designated on-board storage compartment. Confirm the hood latch and make sure that it is operating as it is supposed to. Check the seatbelt and make certain it securely latches and is working properly.
After completing the steps above, turn on the engine. Carefully listen to the engine. Investigate any unusual sounds right away. Check that both the parking brake and the service brake are properly working. Make sure that the accelerator and the steering controls are functioning at optimum performance levels.
