Counterbalance forklift Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration does require drivers using a counterbalanced lift truck to have received lecture style or classroom training. They additionally require that a periodic refresher training in addition to a supervised driving program is completed. There is no required minimum time for the classroom training or supervised driving. As well, there is no frequency mandated for the refresher training either.
Counterbalanced Forklifts
The weight of the counterbalance forklift is utilized to balance its cargo utilizing its own weight. The forklift forks are in a fixed position but can be lowered and raised to secure and transport cargo. The forks run parallel to the forklift's body. OSHA require that individuals who would be using counterbalanced forklifts on the job be trained on the trucks while being in the environment which they will be using them.
Classroom Training
Training either lecture style or in a classroom would provide forklift and driver information for the truck you would be driving. Most training will include several aspects such as the load and weight capacity, height, how to charge or fuel the lift truck. It includes how to gauge the time on the engine along with any forklift specific safety information like where to stand when walking around the truck. Either oral and/or written testing is part of the classroom training. There is no minimum time requirement for the training.
Supervised Driving
The driver of a lift truck will have to learn to utilize the machine while being supervised. The supervised driving has to take place in an environment that resembles the present environment which the operator works in. This atmosphere must include the type of terrain she would be traveling on, have similar vehicle and pedestrian traffic close by, and the same surrounding structures nearby too. There is no specific minimum number of hours the driver needs to drive while being supervised.
